Help with Syntropium, how to take your data with you, and answers to the questions people ask most.
Getting help
Email hello@syntropium.app. Tell us which device and browser you’re using and what you were trying to do. A screenshot helps, if you’re comfortable sharing one — remember it may show the names of your things.
If you use Premium, include your account ID from Settings (there is a button to copy it). We don’t hold your email address in the sync service, so the account ID is how we find your account. We will never ask for your passkey, and we cannot see or unlock your catalog, so please don’t send us its contents.
Syntropium is built by a very small team. We read every message, but it may take a few days to reply.
Exporting your data
- Open the app and go to Settings.
- Choose Export backup. If any of your things have photos, you get a single
.zipfile with the catalog and every photo; otherwise a.jsonfile. - Keep the file somewhere other than the device: a computer, a drive, or a cloud folder you trust.
To restore, choose Import in Settings on any device and pick the file. The file is yours: it is not encrypted, so store it as carefully as you would any list of what you own.
Common questions
Is my data private?
Yes. Without Premium, your catalog and photos never leave your device. With Premium, they are encrypted on your device before they are sent, with a key only your devices hold, so our server stores data it cannot read. There is no analytics or tracking in the app. The full account, including what the server can still see, is on Privacy & trust.
What if I lose my phone?
It depends on whether you sync, and on what else you have:
- With Premium and another device: nothing is lost. Remove the lost phone from Settings on your other device, and pair your new phone from it.
- With Premium and a passkey synced by iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager: sign in on your new phone with the same passkey and your catalog comes back.
- Without Premium: your catalog was only on that phone. Import your most recent backup on the new one.
- If you lose every device and your passkey account: no one can recover your synced data, including us. Here’s why, and how to protect yourself.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Your whole catalog is on your device, so you can browse, search, add, edit and move things without a connection — in the iPhone app, and in the web app once it has been opened once. With Premium, changes made offline sync the next time the device connects.
What does it cost?
Syntropium is free to use on any device, with no account. Premium, which adds encrypted sync between your devices, will be a paid subscription; its price is not yet set. During the beta, testers get Premium free and nothing is charged.
Is there an iPhone app?
Yes, in beta, by invitation. See the beta. The web app also works on iPhone in Safari; add it to your Home Screen so Safari keeps its storage.
I used Syntropium at syntropium.app. Where did it go?
The app now lives at app.syntropium.app, and syntropium.app is this website. Browsers keep each address’s data separately, so the new address starts empty. If you use Premium, open the new address, choose Turn on syncing and use the same passkey — your catalog comes back. If you don’t, import a backup you exported from the old address.
How do I delete my data?
On a device: Clear all data in Settings removes everything stored on that device. Export a backup first if you want to keep it.
For a Premium account: there is no delete button in the app yet. Email us with your account ID and we will delete the account and its encrypted data from the server. How long deleted data lingers in our backups afterwards is still being decided; the draft privacy policy says what is settled so far.
